The Henry Pelham papers include several appointments, for example as Deputy Lieutenant of Middlesex or as Secretary at War, papers relating to his period as Paymaster General and two letters, including one from his brother, the 1st Duke of Newcastle under Lyne. Administrative / Biographical History

Henry Pelham (1696-1754), son of Thomas, 1st Baron Pelham, and brother of Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle under Lyne, was a politician and statesman. He held office as Secretary at War, Paymaster of the Forces, First Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer and was the equivalent of First Minister (or Prime Minister).

The Crown lease of the manor of Byfleet in Surrey was assigned to Henry, Earl of Lincoln in 1720. The manor remained in the family until 1789 when it was sold, along with other Surrey properties, to H.R.H. Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany, by Henry Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of Newcastle under Lyne.
