Administrative / Biographical History
Glasgow & West of Scotland Retail Drapers, Outfitters, Garment Makers & Milliners Association was founded in c1904 as a trade association in Glasgow, Scotland. The association acted as a communal voice for the drapery, outfitting and millinery trades of the area and looked to support the various business interests and trades of its members. For example, the association voiced concern at schools selling their own school caps rather than them being sold through retailers and looked to try and stop manufacturers selling their good direct to customers and by-passing the retailer. It also dealt with complaints from the public concerning retailers who sold faulty goods or offered poor customer service. The Association offered guidelines for its members on matters such as government legislation, pay scales for staff and training. In 1911 , it was instrumental in establishing the Glasgow & West of Scotland Wholesale & Retail Drapers Benevolent Fund to help workers and their families in need of financial support.
The Association was affiliated to the Scottish Retail Drapers, Outfitters, Garment Makers & Millineries Federation and all members received a copy of the Federation's Scottish Retail Drapery Journal .
In 1941 , the Association was dissolve in order to form the Scottish Retail Drapers Association , later known as Scottish Retail Distributors Association Ltd, along with similar associations from Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee.
