The Salvation Army was founded in 1865 when William Booth (1829 - 1912),founded the Christian Mission in London's East End to help feed and house thepoor. In 1878 the mission was reorganised upon military lines and, thepreachers became known as officers and Booth as general. The group thenbecame known as the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is now established in80 countries and has 16,000 evangelical centres and operates more than 3,000social welfare institutions, hospitals, schools and agencies.
