Administrative / Biographical History

There has been a church on the site of Wath Upon Dearne All Saints for at least 900 years, the first record of a priest being Artor Presbyter (c. 1806). The original parish was very extensive and Wath parish church is the mother of Brampton Bierlow, Elsecar, Hoyland St Andrew, Hoyland St Peter, Swinton, Wentworth, half of Thorpe Hesley and part of Kilnhurst.

Only small traces of the Saxon church remain, as this was gradually rebuilt from c. 1455 to c. 1360. The main dates of the church are: Lower Tower c. 1175, the Chancel c. 1230, the Lady Chapel c. 1295 and the Nave c. 1313-1360. There was considerable restoration in 1868 and the vestries and organ chamber were enlarged in 1921, following a fire in 1917.
