John Davies Manuscripts

Scope and Content

A collection comprising correspondence, essays, pedigrees, medical recipes, hymns, and transcripts of hymns and poems, together with sermons and miscellaneous extracts and notes. Also included are papers relating to James Owen, Presbyterian minister; account books belonging to John Thomas of Penddol, Llanllwni and to David Davies ('Dafydd y Gof') of Pencarreg, Carmarthenshire; a manuscript in the hand of the Reverend David James ('Dewi o Ddyfed'); and sermons in the hand of the Reverend John Owen, Thrussington.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Davies (1860-1939), bibliographer and genealogist, was born in Llandysul, Cardiganshire. He was largely self-taught and worked for a number of years at the National Library of Wales, where many of his manuscripts are now stored.
