Scope and Content

The files of minutes and related papers, and reports, are far from complete.

There is evidence from the files that Solly Zuckerman was instrumental in persuading the Trust of the merits of supporting research and development of technolgical aids for the disabled.Files SZ/MMT/11 and SZ/MMT/12 relate respectively to the development of an electronic brailler, and low-cost subtitling devices for application to video media used in schools and specialist units for the deaf and hearing-impaired. File SZ/MMT/12 includes a VHS video-recording of the first symposium on subtitling in the education of deaf children, held at Southampton University, 30 April 1984.

File SZ/MMT/13 relates to applications to the Trust for support of projects at the Bath Institute of Medical Engineering, and File SZ/MMT/14 consists of a few items of printed matter relating to the United World Colleges.

File SZ/MMT/15 relates to a public appeal for funds to erect a statue to Lord Mountbatten's memory on Foreign Office Green; this appeal was managed by the Ministry of Defence and was not related to the work of the Mountbatten Memorial Trust. Solly Zuckerman was canvassed by the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, to sponsor the appeal together with Michael Foot, David Steel, and the three Service chiefs.

Administrative / Biographical History

Following the assassination of Earl Mountbatten of Burma in August 1979, a charitable trust was established in his memory in October of the same year. The Board of Trustees was chaired by the Prince of Wales and Solly Zuckerman was among the first non-family trustees appointed. The aims of the Trust reflected two of Lord Mountbatten's major interests, the United World Colleges and technology.
