Administrative / Biographical History

William Guy Granet (1867-1943) was Secretary of the Railway Companies' Association, 1900-5, General Manager of the Midland Railway Company, 1906-18, a member of the Royal Commission on the Civil Service, 1912-14, Controller of Import Restrictions, 1915, Deputy Director-General, then Director-General, of Military Railways, 1916, Director-General of Movements and Railways, 1917, Chairman of the British and Allied Provisions Commission, and representative of the Ministry of Food in the USA and Canada, 1918. He became Chairman of the Midland Railway Board in 1922, and was chairman of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway from 1924-7. Also a member of several boards of directors, including that of 'The Times', Granet was knighted in 1911 and created a GBE in 1923.
