Letter from Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond to William Cavendish, 4th Duke of Devonshire

Scope and Content

Concerns his rejection of the Duke of Newcastle's proposal that Colonel Townshend's commission should antedate his own and his belief that such an action would be "so contrary to the rules of the army that if it is allowed of, no man can be sure of his rank" [relating to Lord Frederick's promotion]. Written from Nieuport Camp. Signed: "Richmond etc."
