Scope and Content

Financial papers and valuation reports, 2005-2010. Premises papers regarding the development of the hospital site, 2008. Legal papers relating to the legal transfer of the premises to Nuffield Health and subsequent sale of the building, 1979-2017.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Purey Cust Trust was established in 1950, using £8000 of investment originally identified by the Purey Cust Nursing Home for the training of district nurses. Once this responsibility was transferred to the local authority following the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948, it was agreed that the money would be used for charitable purposes instead.
The decision was taken that the income from the investments should be used for 'amenities and comforts for the sick poor in the City of York.' A joint committee was established consisting of members of the Nursing Home's management committee together with the Medical Officer of the Local Authority in order to administer the funds.
Following the transfer of the Purey Cust Nursing Home to Nuffield Health, and the relocation of the hospital to new premises in 2001, the nursing home building stood empty for some years. In 2013 the Trustees sold the buildings to a private developer for residential accommodation. The proceeds of the sale were invested by the Trustees and the income generated from those investments is spent annually on projects in and around York.
During 2014 the Trust became a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and the assets of the original charity were transferred to the CIO.
