Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Andrew Muir Turner , coachman, took tenancy of Kyle Tavern, Ayr, Scotland , in 1868 . He took over and moved to Vulcan Tavern, Ayr , in 1870 , and acquired the Foresters Arms, Newton–upon–Ayr, Scotland , in 1879 . In 1881 he bought Newton Brewery, Newton–upon–Ayr (est. 1789 ), from the executors of D B Young and in 1887 he purchased Royal Citadel Stores , wine shippers and retailers, Ayr , from the Fullarton family. By the 1880s mineral water manufacture had begun at the Newton Brewery. Turner's Ayr & Newton Breweries Ltd was registered in March 1898 to acquire the business and that of James Watson & Co , Ayr Brewery, Ayr (est. 1823 ). Brewing ceased in 1911–1912 at the Ayr Brewery, which became the main centre of operations for Western Contracting Co Ltd (later Westcon Ltd ), outside caterers, set up as a subsidiary after 1918 . The Newton Brewery ceased to brew in 1929 , continuing as a mineral water factory until 1936 , and thereafter acting as a bottling and distribution centre. The company's name changed to Turner's (Ayr) Ltd in about 1930 and was linked from 1934 with J & R Tennent Ltd , Glasgow, Scotland , being completely taken over by them in 1960 . The company was dissolved on 6 August 1991 .

Custodial History
The collection was previously stored with the rest of the Scottish Brewing Archive at Heriot–Watt University. It moved to the University of Glasgow in 1991. It moved to the University of Glasgow in 1991. Custody of the Scottish Brewing Archive was transferred to Glasgow University Archive Services in 2008.
