Administrative / Biographical History

Rush Green Hospital was opened in April 1901 as the Romford Isolation Hospital by Romford Rural District Council. It opened with just 24 beds, though this number had risen to 70 by 1910. The hospital was greatly enlarged during the 1930s and it became a general hospital in 1939. Further expansion occurred after the Second World War and on 29th May 1969 the new maternity unit was officially opened by HRH the Duchess of Kent. This was followed by a Special Care Baby Unit for premature babies. Maternity services were later transferred to Harold Wood Hospital and in 1994 the local health authority decided to close the Hospital. Rush Green Hospital has now been demolished.
