Records of the Merioneth Home Guard and Merioneth and Montgomery Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association, 1931-1967, including handbooks and regulations, 1935-1955; personnel records, 1940; financial records, 1942-1955; correspondence, 1940-1967; magazines, 1942; notebooks, 1942-1943; and miscellaneous papers, 1931-1955.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Merioneth Home Guard was established in 1940 as a defence against enemy invasion during the Second World War, comprising volunteers that were too old or too young for active service, or in reserved occupations. At their inception, the Merionth Home Guard had been known as the Local Defence Volunteers, North Wales Area, but the title was changed in July 1940. The Home Guard liaised with the police and fire service, patrolled coastlines, waterways, railway stations and factories, cleared up rubble and manned aircraft batteries. The Home Guard was disbanded in 1945. After the war, the volunteer military forces in Merionethshire, known as the 7th (Merionethshire and Montgomeryshire) Battalion, The Royal Welch Fusiliers, were reconstituted as a part-time reservist force and became the 636th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Regiment of Artillery, under the Merioneth and Montgomery Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association.
