Alexander Davidson attended Marischal College, Aberdeen.

James Clark Maxwell (1831-1879) was Professor of Natural Philosophy, Marischal College, Aberdeen, 1857-1860; Professor of Natural Philosophy, King's College, London, 1860-1865; and Professor of Experimental Physics, Cambridge University, 1871-1879.

James Nicol (1810-1879), geologist, was Professor of Natural History, Aberdeen University, 1853-1878.
