Registers of offers to the National Gallery

Scope and Content

The registers record details of works offered to the National Gallery. Each volume contains some or all of the following information: date of offer; the name of the person making the offer; address of owner; subject of picture; supposed painter; size and price; decision of the Gallery; date of reply; and general remarks. Each volume has an index to the names of those making the offer.

Administrative / Biographical History

Between 1878 and 1920 the National Gallery kept a register of all works offered to it for sale by members of the public.

The registers have been listed in date order.

The volumes are available to researchers by appointment with the Archivist.

The most recent and complete list is held on CALM ALM. A paper list is also available at the National Gallery Archive. There is an index to the names of those making an offer at the front of each volume.
