Examination papers for the Cambridge University Medieval and Modern Languages Tripos, with some related papers.

There is one paper in typescript and draft and two further papers in draft only, covering 29-31 May 1916. In a separate envelope, in typescript, are three papers of the same tripos for 1923. The papers are in English and Kikuyu.

The papers are in English, Old French, Old Provenal and Latin: (fo. 1) tripos examination papers, 29 and 30 May 1916, in Old French and Old Provenal; (fo. 19) letter from G.N.L. Hall to Charles Sayle, 17 April 1917; (fo. 21) papers set for Lightfoot Scholarship, 2-4 May 1916, in the hand of G.N.L. Hall.

The papers are written in two hands, in English and Russian.

The papers are written in three hands, in English, French, Provenal, Italian, Russian and German: (fo. 1) drafts and typescript of examination papers, 27-29 May 1918; (fo. 61) the same, 26-28 May 1919.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Tripos is the formal examinations of the University of Cambridge. It is commonly divided into two parts, which are taken successively.

Hector Munro Chadwick (1870-1947) was professor of Anglo-Saxon at Cambridge University, 1912-1945.

Acquisition Information

MS.Add.5969 was deposited by Professor H.M. Chadwick, 1918-1919. MS.Add.6187 was deposited by Professor H.M. Chadwick and others from 1919 onwards. There is no record of accession for MSS.Add.5967-5968.
