Scope and Content

Records of the National Army Museum Council comprising minutes of meetings, correspondence and membership papers, together with copies of the Museum's Royal Charter and amendments and related correspondence, and minutes of meetings of standing and ad hoc Council Committees, including the Executive Committee, Advisory Committee, and Indian Army Museum Committee.

Administrative / Biographical History

The National Army Museum was established by Royal Charter on 8 April 1960, and a Council incorporated, originally nominated by the War Office's Army Council. Under the Charter, an Executive Committee and Advisory Committee were also incorporated to govern the new museum. Original members of the Council were:

  • Christopher Soames, Principal Secretary of State for War, as Chairman
  • Hugh Fraser, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for War, as Vice-Chairman
  • General Sir Hugh Stockwell, Adjutant-General to the Forces
  • R G K Way, Permanent Under-Secretary of State for War
  • Major General G W Duke, Director of Personal Services
  • Field Marshal Sir Gerald Templer
  • Field Marshal Sir Claude Auchinleck
  • Colonel R J L Ogilby
  • General Sir Robert Mansergh
The Council met for the first time at the War Office on 16 May 1960.
