Scope and Content

Concerning Gertrude rejoicing in receiving Charles' letter of Apr 15. Discourages notions that she will write another book and declares that she writes only for Charles'. Dines with Una Pope-Hennessy (1876-1949). Relates Richard Pope-Hennessy's (1875-1942) account of battle at Ypres and that of 'Mr Dove'. Reflects on the news of Rupert Brooke's (1887-1915) death at Lemnos. Letter dated 27 Apr 1915, Gertrude confesses to feelings of 'hatred' towards the Germans and argues that it is crucial for the United States to intervene. Notes increasingly virulent anti-German feeling in Britain.
