Miscellaneous Georgian manuscripts in the Bodleian Library

Scope and Content

The Georgian manuscripts include:

  • items purchased for the Library by the Wardrop Fund
  • a valuable menologion (Lives of the Saints) copied in Jerusalem in 1038-40 (MS. Georg. b. 1)
  • a papyrus, which almost certainly came from the Genizah in Cairo
  • notes and correspondence of the Georgian scholar A. Gugushvili.

Miscellaneous Georgian manuscripts, several donated by the Wardrop Fund (see separate description of the Wardrop collection).

Conditions Governing Access

Entry to read in the Library is permitted only on presentation of a valid reader's card (for admissions procedures see http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk).

Acquisition Information

The manuscripts were acquired from the late nineteenth century until 1975; several were donated by the Wardrop Fund. The papers of A. Gugushvili were given to the Library by the executors of W.E.D. Allen in 1975.

Descriptions of MSS. Georg. b. 1, c. 1 (P), d. 1-2, 3 (P), 4, and e. 1 may be found in David Barrett Catalogue of the Wardrop Collection and of other Georgian books and manuscripts in the Bodleian Library (Oxford, 1973).

There is also a card catalogue, arranged by language and located in the Oriental Reading Room, which gives brief descriptions of the manuscripts.
