Miette Dernbach was the daughter of Marcel Hardy, botanist, and her mother was the sister of one of his friends. Miette was six years old when the family emigrated to Mexico in 1906. They returned to Britain after World War I but subsequently settled in Berlin, where Miette met her future husband.
