Howdon Sewage Treatment Works, Tyne & Wear

Scope and Content

Client: Northumbrian Water Authority.

Relating to the construction of the sewage treatment works at Howdon, Tyne & Wear (North Tynside), as part of the major sewerage and sewage treatment scheme, covering the Tyneside conurbation. The works was designed to give primary treatment to sewage from the north and south of the River Tyne. The original scheme involved the removal of overburden which, it was predicted, could lead to changes in stresses in the underlying soils which would have a deleterious effect on the proposed structures. Rowe advised on the in situ testing to predict the heave and consequential stresses.
