The British Geotechnical Society was formed in 1949 as an unincorporated association. It became a registered charity in 1981, and was renamed the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) in 2000. The BGA is the principal association for geotechnical engineers in the United Kingdom and is the UK Member Society of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (see PWR/9/5). The Association organizes the annual Rankine Lecture (see PWR/7/4).
