Notes for a statement to the NUWSS Council by Millicent Garrett Fawcett

Scope and Content

Manuscript draft, nine sheets, headed 'General Statement at Opening of Council, 1915'. Document is largely text rather than notes. Talks about the importance of respecting diversity of opinions in the NUWSS, eg The Society of Friends. If the majority steamroller the rest, then the NU will be destroyed. 'As long as Belgium is under the iron heel of German militarism, as long as the soil of France is invaded and her people outraged, there can be no peace and no talk of it'; 'I personally feel that the issue in this war is not remote from out great struggle for WS [women's suffrage]. It is the struggle of Right against Might. It is the struggle of democracy against militarism.'
