Women's Deputation to the Home Secretary led by Millicent Garrett Fawcett

Scope and Content

Manuscript notes for a speech on behalf of a deputation to Sir George Cave [Home Secretary], 13 Nov 1917. Introduces the members: 'Mrs Creighton, founder and 1st President of the NUWW; Lady Aberconway, President WLE; Mrs Sidney Webb, Economics and Social Welfare. Our Deputation consists of ladies presenting (1) individually important social work or (2) large societies of organised women' …[lists of women] … 'we represent large groups of women with very varying points of view, and with considerable experience of public work. We unite in urging you, most strongly, to accept this amendment and to recommend it to the House of Commons. We should not take this step unless we were convinced that its acceptance would in no way imperil the final success of the Bill itself, especially the clauses referring to the enfranchisement of women which embody the compromise arrived at by the Speaker's Conference' (end possibly missing.)
