Daphne Hamilton Archive

Papers, photographs, and plans collected by and relating to Daphne Hamilton, former chair of Yorkshire Gardens Trust, including catalogues for Backhouse Nurseries, plans created by Backhouse, garden diaries and notebooks kept by her father Alexander Selkirk Hamilton, and correspondence on horticulture, [1920s-2018].

Daphne J. Hamilton was born in York in 1928, the daughter of Alexander Selkirk Hamilton and Marion Grace Selkirk, nee Jackson. Her grandfather Sir James Hamilton had purchased West Bank House from the Backhouse family in 1910, and the Backhouse Nurseries business in 1921. Ms Hamilton’s father, Alexander, managed the nurseries until his death in 1939.
Daphne Hamilton studied at St Andrew's University. She was later Chair of the Yorkshire Gardens Trust. She died in York in March 2019.

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in May 2019 by the Yorkshire Gardens Trust.
