The collection also contains an account book and photographs for the tour to the Far East, 1900-1; miscellaneous notes removed from the diaries; and a notebook of verses compiled by Leonora Lloyd, ca. 1888.
Charles Henry Hawes (1867-1943) was an anthropologist and Associate Director of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, USA.

The diaries for 1900-1 were used for the basis of Hawes's book on the Russian convicts of the islands of Sakhalin, In the uttermost East (London, New York, 1903). Hawes prepared two of the Handbooks prepared under the direction of the Historical Section of the Foreign Office, no. 55, Eastern Siberia, and no. 56, Sakhalin, (both published by H.M. Stationery Office, 1920).
