The donor's father (a solicitor practising in London) purchased the Pitt Hall Estate in 1898 primarily for sporting purposes. The farm was worked intensively up to the end of the First World War, but was thereafter allowed to deteriorate until the donor acquired the property in 1932. Since 1898 there have been continuous accessions of land to the estate, which is now known as Kingsclere Estates Ltd.

Farm size: Acreage has varied between 250 and 1500 acres; flinty clay on chalk; owner-occupied.
