Bundle of Housekeeper's Accounts

Scope and Content

The bundle contains accounts of expenditure by the housekeeper at Dunham Massey Hall. The accounts run for periods of up to one month, although the majority cover a single week. Items of expenditure include butter, eggs, cream, lemons, oranges, Mr [John] Barratt's grocery bills, butcher's bills, Mr Goodier's bills for fowl, chimney sweep's bills, employment of washerwomen and charwomen, bleach, scouring powder, white sand and earthenware. In addition there are separate sections headed "Had from the Farm", listing the numbers of fowls, ducks, geese, turkeys, pigeons and eggs sent from the farm, and "Used this week", recording the weekly consumption of butter in the kitchen and still room. The accounts are not signed, but are written in the hand of Mrs Iveson, the housekeeper.

In addition to the accounts (/1-22), there is a small sheet of paper containing a note of two bills from Mr [John] Barratt, for soft soap and for mops and brushes (/23).
