Letter from J[ames] G[rant] Lumsden to his father[-in-law] Rev Harry Grey. J.G.L. reflects on his first year of marriage, which has been free of illness or financial problems other than the unavoidable costs of the voyage to India and of setting up an establishment. Encloses £50 to discharge debts at home. J.G.L. has been appointed senior assistant judge and session judge at Surat, and describes his duties. They are fortunate in having an excellent evangelical minister newly arrived from England.
Addressed: "Revd Harry Grey | Torr Mohun | near Torquay | Devon".
Dated at: Surat, [India].
Endorsed: "G.L.'s duties judge Jan 1834" in the hand of Harry Grey.
