Petition from some of the principal inhabitants of the manor of Ashton under Lyne [co. Lancs] to Lord Stamford. The petitioners seek leave to erect a chapel of ease in Ashton under Lyne large enough to hold 800 or 1000 persons, and they recommend John Newton as curate. The petition states that the cotton trade has attracted so many strangers into the town that the parish church [St Michael's] is crowded with people standing in the aisles during services.
