E.W. has confirmed by experiment Gilbert White's assertion that trees grow in the lower shoots as well as in the upper (new growth) shoots. E.W. also records an anecdote concerning the appearance of a hot-air balloon over Selborne described in a letter from Gilbert White to Anne Barker, 19 October 1784.
