The bundle contains letters and circulars from William Henry Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, Home Secretary, and Henry Dundas, Secretary of State for War, to George Harry Grey (1737-1819), 5th Earl of Stamford. The majority relate to arrangements for the embodiment of half of the supplementary militia in Cheshire; 243 men were to be recruited into the 85th Regiment of Foot, 486 were to be formed into a separate battalion of supplementary militia.
