The bundle contains papers relating to the augmentation of the county militia by means of a voluntary subscription fund. There are letters from Government ministers outlining plans for augmenting the militia (EGR4/1/2/2/2-5 & /20-22). There is correspondence between George Harry Grey (1737-1819), 5th Earl of Stamford, members of the Cheshire gentry, Lord Grey and Charles Potts, deputy clerk of the peace, (/6-19 & /23-26). A county meeting was called to discuss the best means of augmenting the militia, and it was decided to establish a subscription fund. There are also letters advising Lord Stamford of payments of subscriptions into the account for the augmentation fund (/27-55).
