Bundle of Estreats

Scope and Content

Each estreat contains extracts from the court roll recording amercements imposed at a single session of the court, with an order from the steward to the bailiff to levy the fines. In addition to amercements for failure to appear at court or to perform jury service, in most years fines were imposed on suitors who had allowed their chimneys to catch fire. Suitors were also fined for taking sods from common land (EGR2/6/4/2/11), and for selling butter in short measure (EGR2/6/4/2/12).
