Scope and Content

Letter from Robert Peel [Home Secretary] to Lord Stamford. The application does not strictly comply with the principles by which royal patronage is conferred on local institutions, but "on account of the great importance of the town of Manchester, and the special circumstances set forth in the enclosure which accompanies your Lordship's letter, His Majesty consents to make an exception from His general Rule", and accepts the office of patron.

Dated at: Whitehall.
