Scope and Content

The bundle contains papers relating to the eviction of Henry Bancroft from Little Heath Farm and cottages in Dunham Massey in 1895. Bancroft claimed compensation for unexhausted improvements made to the farm, and the matter was settled by an arbitrator appointed by the Board of Agriculture. The Stamford Trustees claimed for arrears of tithe.

The bundle comprises letters from Henry Bancroft to Robert Cocks, requesting materials for repairs and improvements to the farm, 1886-1895 (/1-13); a copy letter from Henry Pearson to Henry Bancroft, 1891, and 3 copy letters from Robert Cocks to Henry Bancroft, 1894 (/14-17); accounts for building work carried out at the farm, and for improvements such as drainage, 1882-1893 (/18-22); a copy notice to quit, January 1895 (/23); a copy letter from Messrs Bower, Cotton & Bower, solicitors to the Stamford Trustees, to Henry Hall at the Stamford Estate Office in Ashton under Lyne, concerning the eviction, January 1895 (/24); a detailed plan of the farm compiled by H[enry] Pearson at the Stamford Estate Office in Altrincham, showing individual fields between Oldfield Lane and the Bridgewater Canal, with their names, tithe numbers and crops, 1895 (/25); a letter from a son or daughter of Henry Bancroft complaining about the eviction and Robert Cocks' conduct, n.d.
