Scope and Content

Photographic reproduction of a framed half-length portrait of Anne Ford, later Mrs Benjamin Hyde jun, daughter of John Ford esq of Winchester. Anne Ford appears to be about 5-7 years old, and is wearing a dress of seventeenth-century design elaborately trimmed with lace.

[Anne Ford was Gilbert White's great-grandmother: Gilbert White's mother Anne was the daughter of Thomas Holt and his wife, the daughter of Benjamin Hyde jun and Anne Ford: see Rashleigh Holt-White, Life and letters, vol. 1, p. 16.]

Annotated on reverse "Anne Ford (afterwards Mrs Benjamin Hyde junr) daughter of John Ford Esq of Winchester, who was 2d son of Sir William Ford of East Harting" in pencil in the hand of the 9th Earl of Stamford.
