Scope and Content

Letter from Hugo Worthington to [George Harry Grey (1765-1845), 6th] Earl of Stamford, dated 5 April 1839, enclosing Mrs Worthington's account of the distribution of Dunham bedding in Altrincham at Christmas.

Enclosed is the account of the distribution of bedding, in which recipients are classified into 5 categories: (i) husbands and wives are natives; (ii) husbands are natives, wives not; (iii) widows not natives whose husbands were; (iv) deserving objects, [widowers] not natives but whose wives were; (v) widows deserving objects, not natives and whose husbands were not. Also enclosed is a summary of the numbers in each of the above categories (total: 123).

The above were found in a wrapper formed from a letter from Mrs Worthington to [George Harry Grey (1765-1845), 6th] Earl of Stamford, dated 31 March 1838, enclosing 2 copies of the summary of classification of poor people in Altrincham who received Dunham bedding in 1837 (now missing).

Endorsed: i) "1838 Altrincham Classification for Poor People's Bedding" (in the hand of the 6th Earl of Stamford); ii) "149" (on a modern paper label).
