Scope and Content

The bundle contains papers relating to the tenancy of the Axe and Cleaver public house in Dunham Massey. The premises were occupied by Henry Meadowcroft under the representatives of William Slater dec'd, the former lessee. Notices to quit were served on Meadowcroft and Slater's representatives in 1895 and Meadowcroft negotiated for a new lease to be granted to him for 21 years. However, Meadowcroft failed to submit satisfactory plans for the repairs and alterations he undertook to carry out and the premises were sold to Chesters Brewery Company Ltd of Manchester in 1897.

The bundle comprises original and copy correspondence between Robert Cocks and W.D. Bullock at the Stamford Estate Office in Altrincham, Henry Meadowcroft, T[homas] W. Hudson of Hale, architect for Meadowcroft, G[eorge] L. Welford of Manchester, solicitor acting for Meadowcroft, and W.
