In 1537, upon the marriage of his son John to Eleanor daughter of George Booth (1515-43), John Carrington of Carrington esq settled lands in Bollington (pas. Bowdon & Rostherne) and Thelwall that had been conveyed to him by Robert Earl of Sussex (EGR1/2/2/1-2; see also EGR1/2/1/18). Carrington also settled messuages in Ashton under Lyne co. Lancs in 1547 (/4-5), and won his claim in Chancery to the title of the manor of Carrington, one-sixth of the manor of Ashton upon Mersey, and lands in Partington (/7). John Carrington the elder died in 1548. His son, John Carrington II, who had married Eleanor Booth, later married the daughter of Sir William Brereton (/6) and he died in 1553 (/8). In 1573 his son, John Carrington III, entered into a marriage agreement with William Booth (1540-79) (/11-12). In 1589 a fine was levied of the manors of Carrington and Hattersley in favour of William Booth and Richard Holland (/15).

Arrangement
From the evidence of the eighteenth-century Abstract of Deeds (see Subfonds description above), items EGR1/2/2/1-15 originally constituted a single bundle, 175/F2; subsequently item EGR1/2/2/15 became separated from the rest of the bundle, and in 1989 was found in a bundle with a modern label "bundle 1"; this item has now been restored to bundle 175/F2.
