  • Physical Description
106 pieces. Separate bifolios, folios and smaller sheets of paper, held together by a piece of string threaded through the top edge of each sheet, with parchment covers formed from a redundant lease. Condition: the file was found rolled up as a consolidated "brick" that had been severely affected by dampness and mould growth. The file has been opened out and each sheet separated, but there has been extensive loss of text.

Scope and Content

The file consists of separate pieces of paper containing declarations by plaintiffs and pleadings by plaintiffs and defendants in pleas between parties, and occasional writs of certiorari. The pieces are arranged approximately in reverse chronological order, i.e. the earliest at the bottom of the file. 15 documents derive from the court leet for the borough of Altrincham. The cover is annotated: "Declarations from | 2nd George 2nd [1728-9] | to the 7th 1735".

Dating: the majority of pieces are undated; dates have been inferred from the dates of alleged offences or proceedings cited in the documents.
