Scope and Content

Letter from D[everaux] J[ones] Nicholls to Lord Stamford (/18). Provides an account of the parish meeting held today at which Mr Law stated his claim to tithes and threatened to leave the parish and install a curate if the parishioners refused to accept his claim.

Encloses minutes of the meeting (/19), at which it was resolved to resist the vicar's claim, to appoint Messrs Worthington & Nicholls to defend anyone against whom the vicar took action, and to ask Lord Stamford to support the parishioners.

Dated at: Altrincham (/18).

/18 incorrectly dated 24 April 1816; /18 endorsed: "Acct of the Parish Meeting"; /19 endorsed: "Resolutions | of the Parish | Meeting at Bowdon" in the hand of the 5th Earl of Stamford.
