Bundle of Papers re Augmentation of the Militia

Scope and Content

The bundle contains papers relating in particular to the Stockport Volunteer Corps, which was established for the internal defence of the town and received financial support from the fund set up to augment the militia in Cheshire. Papers include correspondence between George Harry Grey (1737-1819), 5th Earl of Stamford, William Henry Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, Home Secretary, Rev Charles Prescot, rector of Stockport, and Holland Watson, commander of the Stockport Corps. There are also minutes of meetings of subscribers to the augmentation fund, copies of resolutions passed at a local meeting in Macclesfield and a county meeting at Northwich, and a notice of a meeting of subscribers (EGR4/1/2/6/1-5, /37).

The majority of pieces date from the period June 1794 to April 1795.
