Court Books

Scope and Content

The three court books contain fair-copy records of proceedings at sessions of the court leet and view of frankpledge for the borough of Altrincham. They were probably copied from the loose verdicts (EGR2/6/1 above), and they follow the same format as the loose verdicts: heading, list of jurors, returns of borough officers (at the October sessions), and presentments and amercements. All entries are made in a fine copperplate hand.

Before c.1860 information is provided on highways, fire prevention, sanitation, the upkeep of fences and cleansing of ditches. After that date very little business was transacted other than the election of officials and the amercement of suitors for non-appearance.
