Scope and Content

Letter from [Capt.] J[oseph] Barra [adjutant] to Lord Grey (/19), dated 21 June 1834. Encloses a statement of the duties of the regimental sergeant-major (now missing). Discusses the merits and recommendations of the man proposed to be appointed. The former sergeant-major received 12s from the regiment and 6s from Capt. [later Lieutenant Colonel, Wilbraham] Egerton. J.B. proposes that Egerton is not asked to contribute, "and by this arrangement we shall make the sergeant major more under immediate command".

Enclosed is another letter from Barra to Lord Grey (/20), dated 24 June. Provides a list of sergeants-major and their rates of pay.

Dated at: Tabley Grove [to. Tabley Superior pa. Rostherne].
