The bundle contains correspondence between George Harry Grey (1737-1819), 5th Earl of Stamford, Holland Watson, commander of the Stockport Volunteer Corps, William Henry Cavendish Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, Home Secretary, and Charles Potts, deputy clerk of the peace, re promotions in the Stockport Corps, Government demands for regular returns of the militia, and other militia matters in 1796 (EGR4/1/2/11/1-20). There are letters relating to the composition of the Commission of the Peace in 1798 (/21-24), and letters relating to food shortages and the high price of provisions in 1799 and 1800 (/24-29). There is a large body of correspondence relating to the reembodiment of the militia in 1801 (/32-56), and papers concerning restrictions on enemy aliens in 1803 (/57-64).
