Scope and Content

The bundle contains papers relating to a dispute between A[ndrew] C[urtis] Sparkes of Oldfield Farm, Altrincham, and the Linotype Company Ltd over liability for the repair and upkeep of Woodfield Road at Broadheath in Altrincham. For three months in 1905 the road was blockaded by Sparkes pending a settlement in the dispute. The Company obtained an injunction against Sparkes and the matter was settled out of court, Sparkes agreeing to pay damages to the Company. The Stamford Trustees, and later the 9th Earl of Stamford, declined to interfere in the matter.

The bundle comprises correspondence between W.D. Bullock at the Stamford Estate Office in Altrincham, Henry Hall at the Stamford Estate Office in Ashton under Lyne, Sir Thomas Wright of Leicester, solicitor to Lord Stamford and Countess of Stamford & Warrington, Messrs Bullock, Worthington & Jackson of Manchester, solicitors, Messrs Farrar & Co. of Manchester, solicitors acting for Sparkes, 1904-1905; newspaper cuttings, 1905; a sectional plan of the intended street, with a copy letter from Stott & Sons of Manchester, architects, 1896; and a letter from the Linotype Company to W.D. Bullock, 1897.
