Bundle of Correspondence and Other Papers

Scope and Content

The bundle contains much correspondence between Lord Grey and Capt. Joseph Barra, adjutant; correspondence between Lord Grey and other officers of the regiment; letters from Daintry, Ryle & Co., Macclesfield, the regimental bankers, to Lord Grey; and correspondence with the War Office and Home Office. Among the subjects discussed in the correspondence are: arrangements for the annual permanent-duty call-out of the regiment; supplies of arms, uniforms, accoutrements etc.; the regimental accounts; appointments to, and resignations from, the corps; payments of Government allowances; and entries for the cavalry cup at Knutsford races. There is considerable correspondence between Lord Grey, Louisa Legh (later Erskine) and others re the command of the Adlington Troop (EGR4/4/1/2/50-59, /62-63, /74-79, /106, /112, /115-116).

As well as correspondence there are: statements of account (EGR4/4/1/2/38 & /68); a return of the regiment (EGR4/4/1/2/45); regimental marching orders (EGR4/4/1/2/82); alterations to dress regulations (EGR4/4/1/2/102); copies of the conditions of entry for the cavalry cup (EGR4/4/1/2/120 & /125); a list of commands (EGR4/4/1/2/128); and a list of inns in Chester and a petition from the innkeepers (EGR4/4/1/2/9-10).
