Settlements and Related Documents

Scope and Content

Deeds relating to the settlement of lands and to arrangements made for marriages, with associated mortgages, grants of annuities, grants of livery, inquisitions etc. No strict settlements from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have been found.

Arrangement

The above types of document generally formed separate bundles from documents concerned with the purchase and sale of land (which are largely arranged geographically), and thus have been arranged together in a single series, EGR1/8. This accords with the example set in the eighteenth-century Abstract of Deeds (see Subfonds description above), which treated such documents separately in a section entitled "General Abstract", in contrast to geographically-specific deeds. In practice the distinction between the two categories was not always clear-cut, and while a small amount of rearrangement has taken place, there has been no attempt to rigorously enforce the division: certain items that relate to settlements are to be found in the series of deeds above, while others that appear to have no reference to settlements etc. reside in this series. Together the two categories formed a single subfonds, evidences of title, with a unified numbering scheme.
