Papers relating to the Commission of the Peace

Scope and Content

George Harry Grey (1765-1845), 6th Earl of Stamford, served on the Commission of the Peace in Cheshire. The series contains only two items: a bundle containing Quarter Sessions agendas, minutes and notes of meetings, 1830-8 (EGR4/2/4/1), and a bundle containing two abstracts of returns of the property valuation in Cheshire, 1840 (EGR4/2/4/2).

A distinction has been made between the papers listed here, which relate to the ordinary business of the Quarter Sessions, and arise from Lord Stamford's membership of the Commission of the Peace, and those papers that relate to appointments to the Commission and derive from Lord Stamford's role as Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire, for which see EGR4/2/3/6-7 above.
