Observations re Turnpike

Scope and Content

Observations respecting a proposed turnpike road from Altrincham to Stockport, and from Bollington towards Warrington. The total distance of the road is calculated, and the distance saved over existing routes. Arguments for and against the proposed road are rehearsed. There are no objections to the Altrincham - Stockport section, since the present road is wholly inadequate for the level of traffic. Objections can be made to the Bollington - Warrington section. It would intersect part of Lord Stamford's estate that is a most valuable preserve for game. If the tolls prove insufficient the townships would be chargeable for the repair of the turnpike. The proximity of Bollington to Dunham Massey makes any population increase there undesirable to the owner of Dunham. However, "On the part of the owner of Dunham Massey it should be well considered whether private interest and convenience ought in this case to be sacrificed to a public benefit."

Endorsed with annotations on distances in the hand of Lord Stamford.
